I’m Starting a Business
Where to start?! That’s the question. Ideas are cheap, execution is everything. But where do you go from here when you think you have the next earth-shattering business idea?! Most ideas die on the vine because most ‘sensible’ people will think about all the reasons something won’t work and they give up on their dream. But what about all the ideas that do work?! How does that happen?! Were they simply smarter, or maybe a little lucky? I don’t think so, when starting a business…execution. is. everything.
There are those that see if there’s water in the pool before they dive in, and those that dive in head first and then check if there’s water in the pool. To be a true entrepreneur you have to be able to dive in head first and execute on your amazing idea and then adjust (or ‘pivot’ as failing entrepreneurs like to say…haha!) to identify your opportunity and then attack. But if you’re sitting on the sidelines over-analyzing all the reasons something won’t work then it will not.
To be a true entrepreneur you have to be able to dive in head first and execute on your amazing idea…
When I started my coffee business, I *started* by importing a shipping container of raw coffee beans from Guatemala and when it finally arrived into the U.S. and the semi-trailer pulled up to unload it all I thought ‘Holy crap, what am I gonna do with all this coffee?!’ Well, I had no choice but to figure it out at that point. I created a cool brand, an online store (volkancoffee.com), and a cozy cafe on the UCSD campus. Now we’re using TACTIC Digital to help us grow our business – everything from online marketing, social media, mobile ordering, and branding. We have a long way to go, but at least we’re not sitting on the side of the pool wondering what coulda’ or shoulda’ been!
